Matthew Broderick’s Performances
Matthew Broderick has acting in his genes. His father,
James Broderick was a noted actor and his mother Patricia Broderick was a screen
writer, playwright and a theatrical director. Born on March 21, 1962, young
Matthew grew up in atmosphere of acting, direction, Broadway and films, turning
his thoughts towards a career in films. Matthew Broderick has had
significant success in his acting career, which is studded with numerous award
winning performances.
An Acting Career
Though Matthew was keen on acting, he was equally interested
in athletics too. A knee injury ruled out a career in athletics and the decision
was made. A talented young actor had arrived in Hollywood and was here to stay.
Matthew Broderick is versatile actor, who has tasted success in various
forms of acting be it films, TV or the stage. He has excelled in most of his
roles and touched his audiences with his award winning performances.
Matthew Broderick’s Early Career
Matthew started off his career in 1983 on Broadway with the
"Torch Song Trilogy’ His performance received critical acclaim. Matthew
Broderick also received several honors for his award winning performance in
the play. Matthew received the Outer Critics Circle Award for the best debut
performance and the Villager Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play,
both for ‘Torch Song Trilogy’. Thus, Matthew’s string of award winning
performances began from here.
The First Tony
With his style and performance, Matthew Broderick had
caught the attention of noted playwright Neil Simpson. Mr. Simpson, cast Matthew
as Eugene Jerome in his Broadway play "Brighton Beach Memoirs’, which was a
runaway success. The play and the role have a special place Mathew Broderick’s
heart as he received his first Tony for his award winning performance in the
play. Matthew was honored with several association awards for this performance.
These included the ‘Theatre World Award ‘and the ‘Outer Critics Circle Award’.
A Star is Born
Soon after this, Matthew became very busy with his work in
films. Matthew Broderick made his debut in Hollywood in ‘Max Dugan Returns’
alongside Marsha Mason. This film is important to Matthew and his fans only for
the reason that it was his debut movie. Otherwise, the movie did not do very
well. Matthew Broderick’s performance as a teenage hacker in ‘War Games’
was well appreciated. But his real moment of glory came in his portrayal of the
lovable Ferris Bueller in ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’. Matthew Broderick’s award
winning performance in the movie earned him a prestigious Golden Globe
nomination for best actor. His role in ‘War Games’ too earned him a best actor
nomination.
Back to Broadway
After a series of films and voice overs, Matthew Broderick
returned to Broadway in 1992 with the lead role in ‘How to Succeed in Business
Without Really Trying’, wich was a smash success. Matthew’s award winning
performance helped him sweep all the best actor awards that year. He received
his second Tony, the Outer Critics Circle Award and the Drama Desk Award. It was
a vindication of sorts for Matthew as his nomination did not win the Drama Desk
Award for ‘Brighton Beach Memoirs’. Matthew Roderick was nominated for
his third Tony for his award winning performance in the 2001musical ‘The
Producers’.
This award winning actor is husband to Sarah Jessica Parker and doting dad to
his son and twin daughters.
